Running MudCrab products from a removable drive improves isolation and reduces detection risk. If you don’t have a spare USB stick, a virtual drive works just as well and in some ways is better, because a RAM-backed drive leaves no trace on your hard disk.
Option 1: ImDisk RAM Disk (Recommended)
Section titled “Option 1: ImDisk RAM Disk (Recommended)”ImDisk Toolkit is a free, trusted utility that creates a virtual drive backed by your system’s RAM. It shows up in File Explorer like any other drive, and its contents are wiped automatically every time you reboot.
Install ImDisk
Section titled “Install ImDisk”- Download ImDisk Toolkit from sourceforge.net/projects/imdisk-toolkit
- Run the installer and accept the defaults
- Reboot if prompted
Create the virtual drive
Section titled “Create the virtual drive”- Open the Start menu and search for RamDisk Configuration and open it
- Click Install RAM disk
- Set the size to at least 64 MB (any MudCrab product file fits comfortably)
- Pick a drive letter you’ll remember, for example R:
- Leave everything else as default and click OK
The drive will appear in File Explorer immediately. It works exactly like a USB flash drive.
Use and eject
Section titled “Use and eject”- Copy your downloaded MudCrab product file (
.exeor.hta) onto the virtual drive - Run the file from there
- When you are done, eject the drive: right-click it in File Explorer and select Eject, or simply reboot
Option 2: Physical USB Drive
Section titled “Option 2: Physical USB Drive”If you have a USB flash drive (any size; even 1 GB is more than enough):
- Plug the USB drive into your PC
- Copy your downloaded MudCrab product file onto it
- Run the file from the USB drive
- Eject the drive when you are done: right-click it in File Explorer and select Eject, then physically remove it
Which option should I use?
Section titled “Which option should I use?”| RAM Disk (ImDisk) | Physical USB | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Free if you own one |
| Setup time | ~2 minutes | None |
| Leaves files on disk | Never | Only if you forget to delete |
| Wipes on reboot | Yes, automatically | No |
| Works without hardware | Yes | No |
For most users the RAM disk is the better choice. It requires no hardware, wipes itself on reboot, and behaves identically to a USB drive while the session is active.
